On June 20, 2024, the Ohio Federal Research Network (OFRN) Opportunity Day took place from 9 to 10:30 am Eastern Time and was hosted by Parallax Advanced Research in collaboration with The Ohio State University and the Ohio Department of Higher Education, and the Defense Innovation Unit OnRamp Hub: Ohio. This event was tailored for government, academic, and industry innovators and researchers in Ohio, as well as individuals keen on participating in research and development of innovative solutions for government challenges.
The goal of the event was to enable industry and academia to:
- Understand new R&D opportunities to win R&D business for Ohio.
- Learn about and possibly pursue the federal funding opportunities presented at the event.
- Position OFRN as a key R&D collaborator for the State of Ohio.

The June 2024 Opportunity Day focused on the possibilities and challenges in the "Quantum" domain. The agenda featured subject-matter expert presentations, Q&A sessions, and a briefing on current and upcoming federal R&D funding opportunities.
The event started with Maj Gen (Ret.) Mark Bartman, USAF, VP for Advanced Development at Parallax Advanced Research, providing an overview of Ohio's role and contribution to the OFRN and Defense Innovation OnRamp Hub: Ohio programs.
Following the overview, Dr. Ahmet Erdemir, a veteran of computational biomechanics research, joined us from Cleveland Clinic to talk about Cleveland Clinic IBM Discovery Accelerator and adopting quantum computing for biomedicine. Ahmet has made impactful contributions to metascience of modeling and simulation. He is also stewarding the scientific program of the Cleveland Clinic – IBM Discovery Accelerator, a ten-year partnership to accelerate research and innovation at the intersection of biomedicine and advanced computing.
Next, Charles L. A. Cerny, Ph. D. and Principal Electronics Engineer for the Air Force Research Laboratory joined us to speak about Rydberg Atom Photon Interleaver for Quantum Information Excision. Dr. Cerny is assigned to the Sensors Directorate where he has both conceptualized and characterized innovative RF architectures requiring the integration of novel component/sub-system technologies based in photonics, semiconductors and superconductors in conjunction with complex RF signal processing meeting the needs for military and aerospace communities.
Lastly, OFRN presented research on federal R&D research funding opportunities.
- ARPA-H-SOL-24-104 Health Science Futures: Office-Wide Innovative Solutions Opening for Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health
- Thermal Transport Processes
- LPS Qubit Collaboratory (LQC)
- Global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Critical and Emerging Technology (CET) Standards
In summary, the June 2024 OFRN Opportunity Day successfully fostered collaboration, knowledge exchange, and exploration of innovative solutions and funding opportunities to support quantum research. The OFRN Opportunity Days propel Ohio's research and development endeavors to new heights and ensure public-private partnerships continue to connect to innovate solutions for our national security needs.
