Academic | Our group provides expertise and experience in the fields of smart materials, system dynamics, and Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM). Smart materials have controllable properties, allowing them to be used for a range applications including actuation, sensing, and energy harvesting. In addition, we conduct research on Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM) and develop new uses and applications for the technology. UAM is a solid-state process for additively building metal parts and structures from foil feedstock without melting the material. This enables the creation of internal cavities and features; welding of dissimilar metals for multi-material parts and joining; and embedment of temperature-sensitive materials such as fibers, sensors, and electronics. Some specific areas of experience pertaining to this OFRN solicitation include functional and hybrid structures for thermal management, active and passive vibration dampening, and tunable CTE materials and structures. In addition, UAM enables cladding and the design and fabrication of multi-material metal parts to achieve targeted thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. |
