 On March 20, 2024, the Ohio Federal Research Network (OFRN) Opportunity Day took place from 9 to 10:30 am Eastern Time and was hosted by Parallax Advanced Research in collaboration with The Ohio State University and the Ohio Department of Higher Education. This event was tailored for government, academic, and industry innovators and researchers in Ohio, as well as individuals keen on participating in research and development of innovative solutions for government challenges.  

The goal of the event was to enable industry and academia to:      

  • Understand new R&D opportunities to win R&D business for Ohio.    
  • Learn about and possibly pursue the federal funding opportunities presented at the event.
  • Position OFRN as a key R&D collaborator for the State of Ohio.

The March 2024 Opportunity Day focused on the possibilities and challenges in the "Commercial Operations in Low Earth Orbit" domain. The agenda featured subject-matter expert presentations, Q&A sessions, and a briefing on current and upcoming federal R&D funding opportunities.

The event started with Maj Gen (Ret.) Mark Bartman, USAF, VP for Advanced Development at Parallax Advanced Research, provides an overview of Ohio's role and contribution to the OFRN and newly created Defense Innovation OnRamp Hub: Ohio programs.

Following the overview, Dr. Eric Brizes from NASA Glenn Research Center (NASA GRC) presented on the current landscape of commercial operations in low Earth orbit and NASA’s perspectives on related research.

Next, Dr. Chad Waddington, representing the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), presented the AFRL's innovative initiatives for commercial operations in low Earth orbit.

 

Lastly, OFRN Program Associate Steven Price presented his research on federal R&D research funding opportunities.  

 

In summary, the March 2024 OFRN Opportunity Day successfully fostered collaboration, knowledge exchange, and exploration of innovative solutions and funding opportunities to support commercial operations in low Earth orbit.
